Morgan Stanley Dean Witter officially became Morgan Stanley on Monday, shortening its name because the firm considered it “unwieldy.”

The firm decided to change its name in January as part of a global branding initiative, pending a board vote, which took place March 20. The name change is accompanied by a flashy new logo, which Morgan Stanley unveiled Monday on its Web site, www.morganstanley.com.

This is the second name shortening for the firm. When Morgan Stanley and Dean Witter Discover & Co. merged in May 1997, the new firm was called Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Discover & Co. In March 1998, “Discover” was dropped.
