Digital audio players are everywhere these days — even on the desks of Fidelity advisors.

The mutual fund giant recently introduced “podcasts” for its independent advisors. Podcasting — which derives the first part of its name from Apple Computer's iPod, the astronomically popular digital audio gadget — is a method of publishing radio programs via the Internet. The files are typically delivered in a format that can be downloaded (if desired) to iPods, but the files also can be burned to a CD or saved to a computer desktop.

Fidelity is hoping podcasts will give its time-pressed advisors more flexibility in staying current on industry trends. Current podcast subjects include practice management, technology, compliance and industry regulations.
