PaineWebber, which merged with UBS Warburg last fall, is now UBS PaineWebber. The change was official March 5 and announced in advertisements.

The goal is to increase brand awareness for UBS in the United States, according to the firm. Its 15-year-old advertising tagline, “Thank You, PaineWebber,” will become “UBS PaineWebber, Thank You.”

At press time, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter was planning to drop “Dean Witter” from its name. The company's board was set to vote on the move March 20. A company spokesperson did not know when the change would take effect.

This is the second name shortening for MSDW. When Morgan Stanley and Dean Witter Discover & Co. merged in May 1997, the new firm was called Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Discover & Co. In March 1998, “Discover” was dropped.
